After a period of trench training the newly arrived division took over a sector of the line straddling the French-Belgian border near Ploegsteert. On 1st August, 1915, 8th Royal Fusiliers were in the trenches at Houplines. The Battalion Diary records that it was a quiet day except for two incidents.
